Making your writing goals specific means defining the content, verb and word length for the section. This means not having a writing goal like, 'I plan to have this article written by the end of the year' but 'My next writing goal is to summarise and critique twelve articles for the literature review section in 800 words on Tuesday between 9am and 10. 30'. Some people see this as too mechanical for academic writing, but it is a way of forcing yourself to make decisions about content, sequence and proportion for your article. While most people see writing as a solitary activity, communal writing writing with others who are writing can help to develop confidence, fluency and focus. It can help you develop the discipline of regular writing. Doing your academic writing in groups or at writing retreats are ways of working on your own writing, but if you unplug from email, internet and all other devices also developing the concentration needed for regular, high level academic writing. At some point ideally at regular intervals you can get a lot more done if you just focus on writing. If this seems like common sense, it isn't common practice. Most people do several things at once, but this won't always work for regular journal article writing. At some point, it pays to privilege writing over all other tasks, for a defined period, such as 90 minutes, which is long enough to get something done on your paper, but not so long that it's impossible to find the time.

You may already know this, but it has been my experience that when a Jewish man speaks of his father, it is usually, perhaps even in the majority of cases, done with such fealty, and devotion that you leave with an enhanced understanding of the mitzvah of "kibud av", honoring thy father. And so it was when Rabbi Twerski related the story of his father who exhorted his young son to grow up and become a mensch, naturally. A handsome man of slight stature, a really great white beard, and eyes which have seen quite a lot, Rabbi Twerski has one of those special faces that invite us in with a pleasant mien and whose years reassure us we've come to the right man. If there was one primary lesson with which one might have returned home last Wednesday night, March 2, 2011, I'd like to suggest the following: that each one of us should strive to embody true Torah values in our lives. That is, however, only one half of the equation. What little I remember about equations is this: they must balance on both sides of the "equal sign" as must our lives. Therefore, it simply isn't enough that we embody Torah values. Torah is not my private posession, my little secret nor yours. If left unshared with unhappy and needy others, then what good are those Torah values? Why haven't we learned and implemented this lesson long ago? What's even better about it is this: it's within everyone's reach. So, even if you have short arms, you might not make such a good boxer, but learn and share Torah with others? That, my friends, we can all do. I assure you.

This may have derived from Gardners interpretation of Murrays claim that the ancient witch cult was a fertility religion. Thus, many practitioners of British Traditional Wicca have argued that men and women are not capable of correctly working magic without mixed pairings. Although Gerald Gardner initially demonstrated an aversion to homosexuality, claiming that it brought down the curse of the goddess, it is now generally accepted in all traditions of Wicca, with groups such as the Minoan Brotherhood openly basing their philosophy upon it, and various important figures in the Craft, such as Alex Sanders and Eddie Buczynski, being openly homosexual or bisexual. The scholar of religion Joanne Pearson noted that in her experience, most Wiccans take a realistic view of living in the real world replete with its many problems and do not claim that the gods have all the answers to these. She suggested that Wiccans do not claim to seek perfection but instead wholeness or completeness, which includes an acceptance of traits like anger, weakness, and pain. She contrasted the Wiccan acceptance of an interplay between light and dark against the New Age focus on white light. Similarly, the scholar of religion Geoffrey Samuel noted that Wiccans devote a perhaps surprising amount of attention to darkness and death. Many traditions hold a belief in the five classical elements, although they are seen as symbolic as representations of the phases of matter. These five elements are invoked during many magical rituals, notably when consecrating a magic circle. The five elements are air, fire, water, earth, and aether or spirit. Aether unites the other four.

I feel like everyone was related somehow, intellectually and spiritually, to Allen Ginsberg, or knew him through other people, because Allen was this wonderfully complicated, openhearted and fruity Friend to All. He was the great tradition of caring, of taking in, of being kind hopefully as an artist and a person you follow the kindness. As Stephan Frears once said in a QandA;: I followed the kindness. But the idea that we could do this ourselves, and get our friends, other poets, to contribute came out of the idea of gathering, collective gatherings. It was a simple leap. You assemble ideas, you people. Interestingly, I dont remember us ever reading any of Allens poems. Maybe his great, spacious interviews, but not his poetry. And then I understood that the answer is yes, yes yes: I care because I want you to care about me. I care because I have become aware of my absolute dependency upon you, whoever you are, for the outcome of my social, my democratic experience.
